L'ARTE È UNA FATICA INUTILE

Technical session No. 3

Cleaning, consolidation and filling

1. Cleaning
As a first step, the surfaces were cleaned with a borax-based gel to remove surface deposits and loose material without altering the original substance of the object.
The gel is spread with a brush or spatula, left to act for a controlled time, and then removed.

2. Consolidation
Consolidation was then carried out on some damaged parts of the wood by applying vinyl resin, to restore cohesion and mechanical stability to the support in the deteriorated areas.

3. Filling and reassembly
Work then addressed the areas of detachment marked by losses and missing material, as well as the points where the elements had lost their alignment, creating breaks in continuity. These areas were treated with filling, to close the gaps and restore the continuity of the surface.

Finally, a piece of wood belonging to the second toe of the left foot was reassembled by gluing it back into its original position, after checking that the fracture surfaces matched correctly.
